I was recently honoured to be invited as a specialist guest lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. I delivered a session on the pathophysiology of upper gastrointestinal (GI) disorders to master’s level dietetics students. This opportunity allowed me to share my expertise with the next generation of dietitians. I focussed on providing them with a deeper understanding of complex GI conditions and their impact on nutritional management.
The Lecture: Pathophysiology of Upper GI Disorders
The session was designed to equip students with advanced knowledge of upper GI disorders. Topics included gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), peptic ulcers, H. pylori infection, dysphagia, gastritis, and duodenal diverticular disease.
I emphasised the underlying mechanisms of these conditions, discussing how pathophysiology influences dietary and medical interventions. My goal was to help the dietetic students understand how these conditions are caused, the consequences on body function and how that impacts nutritional status.
The students were highly engaged, asking insightful questions about patient management strategies, diagnostic markers, and treatments recommended by national guidelines. It was a privilege to contribute to their learning journey and witness their enthusiasm for the field.
Insight from specialist dietitians with years of hands-on clinical experience can bring theoretical knowledge on GI disorders to life.
Experience in GI Disorders
As a specialist in gastrointestinal health, I have dedicated my career to understanding and managing complex GI conditions. My background includes extensive clinical experience, resource writing and collaboration with other professionals. I am committed to evidence-based practice, ensuring that the knowledge I share is up-to-date and clinically relevant.
Over the years, I have worked with patients suffering from a range of GI disorders. I help clients navigate dietary strategies to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. This hands-on experience, combined with a strong foundation of knowledge, allows me to deliver lectures that are both up to date with guidance but also practically applicable.
My approach to teaching is not just about delivering information—it’s about inspiring critical thinking, encouraging discussion, and motivating students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
